What is a 404 page?
A 404 page is a web page that gets displayed when a 404 error occurs. A 404 error occurs when someone tries to access a web page that doesn’t exist.
A well-run site will trap 404 page errors by displaying a helpful message rather than showing a nasty and unhelpful error message. So is there anything you can do as an internet marketer to profit from people who land on pages that are no longer online or were never there in the first place?
The answer is yes, Internet Marketers can make use of 404 pages in several ways.
First they can display a helpful message which could be a sales page.
Second, they can use intelligence to display the page that the searcher was most probably looking for.
Third, they can monitor where people come from who land on the 404 page and use that to spot links to their sites that have been set up incorrectly.
If you monitor your 404 page traffic you can also spot people trying to hunt down your download pages to get access to your information products without paying.
